Aquamarine Gemstones Once Believe To Have Magical Powers
As legend would have it, out on the deep blue sea, the pirates and sailors often found themselves in a passionate love/fear relationship with the ocean. It was the ocean that would carry them to distant shore but it was the fury of the waves that could tear their ship apart and pull them all down to the depths of the ocean. It was not uncommon for the sailors to find solace in the believed power of the aquamarine gemstone.
The Deep Blue Sea Is Found Onshore In A Gemstone
Aquamarine is a gemstone that gets it’s name from two Latin words that mean water and sea. This gemstone can vary in color from pale blue to blue green, the colors of the ocean. It is said that when the stone is held underwater, it seems to completely disappear.
History Finds The Aquamarine Gemstone Provides Wisdom And Strength
It is written in history that ancient sailors once traveled with aquamarine crystals, sleeping with them tucked under their pillows at night. These crystals were said to provide safe passage during sea travel. Many sailors believed that the mermaids’ tails were made of aquamarine.
Aquamarine has always held a popular place in ancient folklore and mythology. In the Middle Ages, it was believed that aquamarine could provide security from the fatal effects of poisoning.
In Ancient Greece, this gemstone was considered to bestow great wisdom on individuals; statues were built that symbolized power and strength. For the statue’s eyes, aquamarine gemstones were placed into the statue. It was believed that anyone that looked upon these statues would become filled with great wisdom and power and that the individual would suddenly possess the ability to see the future. Many times these statues were placed along the shoreline to calm Poseidon and to insure safe travel for ships headed out to sea.
There Is Beauty And Value In The Color Blue
Aquamarine is a very beautiful stone, the largest ever mined was found in Brazil in 1910. It weighed over 110 kg and it was 48.5 cm long and 42 cm in diameter. Today, many of the gemstones are heated to increase the depth of the blue. When buying an aquamarine gemstone, it is important to remember that the deeper the blue the more valued the stone becomes.
Aquamarine gemstones are Colorado’s state gem. They are also the birth gemstone for the month of March and the 19th wedding anniversary gemstone.
