The Way To Tell A Genuine Diamond From A Fake

The surest method to determine  if a diamond is real or not is to go to a professional for an evaluation. It takes more than a jewelers’ loupe for clever amateurs to assess a stone. Even trained professionals are finding it difficult to determine a “real” diamond.

There are some regulations of the thumbs.. Always examine the stamp inside of the band which will tell you how many karats it is and this will increase your chances of making a legitimate deal.

You can closely watch and observe the corners, edges and girdle-band of the cut stone, with the help of a handy magnifying glass or a jeweler’s loupe One way to tell if it is not real is to look at the edges, if they appear soft and have a rolled appearance than you can be sure it is a fake. You can also achieve this effect using a clear, smooth girdle at the junction of the facets around the heart of the stone.

A loupe can help you identify any imperfections in the stone. These were created naturally and are difficult to copy. Natural diamonds are worth the most when they are flawless and diamonds with minor flaws are not easily seen by most consumers.

Generally, weight may be utilized as a normal indicator for those types of things. Many of the materials that are used for fake diamonds are actually heavier or lighter than the real thing. In particular, the most well known fake diamond, cubic zirconium, is heavier. With a few diamonds and a professional quality scale, you can do some tests to compare the different cuts and quality.

It is a bad idea to use your diamond to cut glass. Do not try acid tests that may be used on metals. You should not try to smash a diamond, it will crush just like another crystalline substance and a lot better than some of them.  If it is a diamond, and you breath on it, the moisture will disappear too fast for you to see it; whereas, with a fake, it won’t. Thats a small hint, no more, and its far from fail proof. Be careful about composition diamonds, which have a base of one material and a table top made of diamonds, this will pass a diamond tester, but be relatively worthless.

Always remember to have a professional appraisal done so that you’ll know the diamond isn’t a fake. That is why extra caution should be used when choosing a new jeweler, and each new gem or stone should have come with a certificate of authenticity. Each stone is unique and the documentation can go a long way to establish your stone.. To get a correct and fair appraisal, a professional jeweler, can be a reliable and helpful source, as long as he has good sources for his information.

Not making any negative generalizations, but be quite cautious when having a stone appraised at a chain jewelry store.  These example businesses show the positive aspects of mass production and distribution as well as the negative aspects. These stores are usually well run and honest, but what they lack is training and expertise.

Make sure to take the time to learn the background, licensing, and experience of the assessor after checking online or in the yellow pages for advertisements. In order to get the best ring for you, you need someone experienced to guide you and that would be a jeweler who has experience in dealing in stones, someone who is a good business person and has a license to certify his experience.

Be sure that they test the stone in your presence if you are bringing it in. (to discourage switching the product by less than honest jewelers) . Turn around and walk right back out if you are refused. Request complete documentation if purchasing a stone. Regardless of your choice, you will need to understand that even the pros have difficulty in determining if a diamond is real or not, sometimes even looking at them two or three times.
